Situated in the small village of Great Wymondley, Hitchin, Hertfordshire. The willow project has been one our studio favourites. The narrative behind the project took shape around an existing willow tree located in the rear garden, which has significant sentimental value. Our design strategy quickly took shape using the tree as a performing act in theatre, taking centre stage. The audience would be made up from a wrapped glass facade, where the willow could be viewed from all rooms to the rear of the dwelling and extending the master bed to include, a private balcony where the sun would circulate during the day and enjoyed in the evening in a cooler setting.
The brief, to take a small existing dwelling, which was part 2 storey including two small single bedrooms and to create a large sized dwelling, to accommodate a growing family. We were able to achieve beyond the the clients expectations in creating 5 large double bedrooms with en-suits and reducing the intended extension line, overall saving significant costs through careful and deliberate design. The downstairs layout includes a home office, large family living and dining space which joins to a modern kitchen linked to the library, reading space. Just off from the kitchen is a large size utility space with connection to the integral garage. The outcome of the project was a huge success and received better than expected.
